The Kunsthaus Zug is home to the most comprehensive collection of Viennese Modernist art in Europe outside Austria. It owns groups of works by artists including Richard Gerstl, Josef Hoffmann, Friedrich Kiesler, Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, Alfred Kubin and Egon Schiele, along with applied art from the Wiener Werkstätte.
The majority of the works in the Kunsthaus Zug are on permanent loan from the Kamm Collection Foundation and the Werner Coninx Foundation. The Kamm family from Zug began to build up their collection in the 1950s. They owned the Würthle Gallery in Vienna, and this became the starting point for their collecting activities. They were advised in this by the Austrian sculptor Fritz Wotruba (1907–1975), who got to know Fritz Kamm and Editha Kamm-Ehrbar when living in exile in Zug between 1939 and 1945.
The collection’s focus on Viennese Modernism extends into the present day by incorporating contemporary works from Austria and Central Europe. The works of Günter Brus, Heidulf Gerngross, Michael Kienzer, Peter Kogler, Tomas Kratky, Péter Nádas, Pravoslav Sovak, Dominik Steiger, Heimo Zobernig and others form a link to the present.
