The 13th Frederick Kiesler Prize for Architecture and Art was presented to Japanese architect Junya Ishigami at a ceremony at the Austrian Postal Savings Bank in Vienna on Monday, June 17 2024, by Theresia Niedermüller, Head of Section at the Austrian Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Civil Service and Sport.
The top-class international jury - consisting of Leonor Antunes (artist, Berlin), Céline Condorelli (artist, London/Milan), Harald Gründl (designer, Vienna), Anupama Kundoo (architect, Berlin), and chairman Kjetil Thorsen (architect, Oslo) - selected Junya Ishigami as the winner of the Friedrich Kiesler Prize for Architecture and Art.
Born in 1974 in Kanagawa Prefecture, Junya Ishigami is an outstanding talent on the international architecture scene. After working for several years in the office of Pritzker Prize winner Kazuyo Sejima/SANAA, he founded his own office in 2004.
The Austrian FrederickKiesler Prize for Architecture and Art is one of the most highly endowed international prizes in this field and serves to honour the visionary work of the artist, designer, stage designer and architect Frederick Kiesler (1890-1965), who was born in Chernivtsi in 1890 and emigrated to the USA in 1926. The prize is awarded and donated every two years, alternately by the Republic of Austria and the City of Vienna, and is organized by the Austrian Frederick and Lillian Kiesler Private Foundation, based in Vienna.
