Gustav Klimt (1862-1918), best known for his iconic portraits and ornamental artworks, also created outstanding works as a landscape painter. Inspired by the natural idylls of his summer holidays at Lake Attersee, Klimt developed a unique approach to landscape painting. Instead of a realistic depiction, he chose a stylised, almost abstract view characterised by dense areas of colour and patterns. An example is the painting "Gartenlandschaft mit Bergkuppe" from 1916. It belongs to the last phase of his so-called Weissenbach period and shows nature in a crystalline, almost frozen form. The colourful floral zone in the foreground becomes a two-dimensional, space-filling mosaic of natural forms that emphasises decorative and artistic aspects. The hilltop in the background frames the dense carpet of forms, gently closing it off. The result is an exciting dialogue between linear-graphic and painterly design. The painting combines figurative forms and ornamental richness and demonstrates Klimt's ability to dissolve the boundaries between figuration and abstraction.
