Picasso 347
Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) was a master printmaker. He experimented with different techniques throughout his life, combining them to satisfy his exuberant imagination, his creative drive and the expressive needs of his swift hand. Between March and October 1968, he created no fewer than 347 engravings. Ignoring all norms, he mixed etching, aquatint, sugar aquatint, drypoint etching and mezzotinto, all at the same time, but separately. Precise, fast lines alternate with black surfaces mixed with carefully lined hatching. The observer is immersed in a stream of images: from one sheet to the next, we see a parade of performers, courtesans, musketeers, artists and models in their costumes, revelling in the comedy of existence and displaying the humour and melancholy of the ageing artist. The exhibition presents 85 artworks from the significant 347 Series, on loan from a private collection in Zug. This extraordinary series has not been presented in this form before in German-speaking Switzerland.
