Jules Spinachsch

At the End of Longing

Dec 7, 2008–Feb 21, 2009
@Kunsthaus Zug

This exhibition of the Swiss artist Jules Spinatsch (b. 1964 in Davos) at the Kunsthaus Zug is his first major monographic exhibition in a Swiss art museum. Photographs and large-scale video and pictorial installations offer detailed insight into the broad scope of his artistic interests and the development of his oeuvre. In some well-known works and many others never before exhibited, he subtly reveals contradictions.

In eight rooms, each with a different theme, Spinatsch takes us “by circuitous routes and byways and in a variety of media, all the way from Davos via California to the Seychelles, and from real and technological locations to imagined landscapes – landscapes of longing. Yet direct references point back to periods earlier than photography itself, when those who could afford it brought home not photographs but obelisks, or when a mammoth was preserved as an image for posterity.” (JS)
