We can see how through the whole history of humanity Through thousands of years, despite all catastrophes, natural and created by humans, the resilience of human soul, desire to survive, to create and to preserve, is always winning. It looks like an enormous wave is taking the boat and the man down, but we want to believe that with this LAST STROKE, the man will win the battle for his life, he will survive and the History of Human Life, of Human Cultural Development, will still be preserved by us for the future generations.

THE LAST STROKE Or The Monument To The Last Man Ilya & Emilia Kabakov, 2019

Against the background of the Ukraine War, Kunsthaus Zug is showing the room-sized installation The Last Stroke or The Monument to the Last Man, 2019, by the Ukrainian-American artist couple Ilya and Emilia Kabakov. The installation was first exhibited in Berlin and then at the new Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow until the outbreak of war, and has now found its way to Zug. It was first shown on the occasion of the International Museum Day under the motto “The Power of Museums”. After the globally acclaimed participation project The Ship of Tolerance with the artist couple ended in autumn 2021, the presentation of the installation marks the beginning of a renewed cooperation to help the children from Ukraine in the current situation.
