Friedrich Kuhn

1926-1972

Feb 14–Apr 25, 1993
@Kunsthaus Zug

From 14 February to 25 April 1993, the Kunsthaus Zug is staging a comprehensive retrospective on the Zurich artist Friedrich Kuhn (1926-1972). Friedrich Kuhn, who lived in Zurich for many years and was already a legendary artistic figure there during his lifetime, tried to make an impression in the world by unorthodox means. To set up a splendid, imaginative, but also cryptic and offending art world within the narrow constraints of bourgeois conventions. The result is a very independent work of the highest quality.

With around 150 works from over forty collections, the Kunsthaus Zug will present an overview of the early work of the 1950s to the last period of work created in the 1970s. In addition to oil paintings and works on paper, many of his objects and sculptures of equal significance will be on display. It will probably be the artist's most comprehensive exhibition ever and the first in a museum in two decades. The intention of the project is to honour Friedrich Kuhn, who was a "cult figure" for a small circle of artists and friends during his lifetime but remained an outsider, as an important artist of the 1960s in Switzerland and to make him known to a broad public. The multifaceted and extensive oeuvre is still to be discovered.

Friedrich Kuhn is also a central figure in the field of Swiss fantasy within the collection of the Zuger Kunstgesellschaft. It owns the largest group of works by the artist among Swiss museums.
