Franziska Zumbach
Paintings
In her first major solo exhibition, the painter Franziska Zumbach, who was born in Zug and is active in Zurich, presents her work. In 1990 and 1997 she was shown in group exhibitions at the Kunsthaus Zug. Following in the footsteps of concrete art, she has opened up an independent field of work, which she explores creatively and persistently. The austerity of simple grids with irritating color contrasts, which characterizes her paintings, is counterbalanced by mild color tones and rhythmically moving gradients. The integration of chance ensures an opening of the supposed hermeticism. Order is humanized, rules become a game. Zumbach's pictures, which are as radical as they are sensitive, breathe in the free space of their individuality.
On display in the exhibition are works from the 90s. Paintings and works on paper are supplemented by 'thread paintings' and the artist's 'sand archive'. The conventional pattern of monographic presentations is broken by various 'Fester' with works by Josef Albers, Stefan Gritsch, Hans-Peter Kistler, Agnes Martin, Sophie Taeuber-Arp and Thomas Ruff.
