Apr 23–May 28, 1995
@Kunsthaus Zug

Walter J. Moeschlin, an artist from Basel who is almost unknown today, was shown during his lifetime and posthumously in exhibitions, usually only in connection with the , Gruppe 33- or "Allianz". Apart from a small catalogue for the large memorial exhibition at the Kunsthalle Basel in 1969, he appears in literature only as a member of one of the two groups of artists. The solo presentation at the Kunsthaus Zug is, apart from of a few smaller gallery exhibitions, since then the first in a public exhibition institute. The Kunsthaus Zug acquired the artist's estate from his widow in 1994 and is now presenting it for the first time. At a later date, which has not yet been determined, a larger, more comprehensive exhibition of Moeslin's work is to be realized.

Walter J. Moeschlin was born in Basel on July 28, 1902. After a short, unsuccessful apprenticeship as a merchant, the twenty-year-old traveled to Indie and what is now Indonesia, where he worked as an inspector on a plantation and also worked as a self-taught painter. He returned home in 1924. During his stay, he had intensively studied Hindu thought, and it soon became apparent that his stay in the Far East had left an indelible imprint on his thinking and work. After his return, he attended the Basel Trade School and went to study in South of France, Italy, Paris and Berlin. However, it was not until he was over thirty years old that he finally turned to art. In the 1930s, he experimented with constructivist and abstract pictorial possibilities.
