International Museum Day has been organised worldwide since 1978 by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in collaboration with national committees such as its Swiss branch, ICOM Switzerland, and the Swiss Museum Association (VMS; Verband der Museen der Schweiz). Its aim is to bring museums closer to a wider public and to promote their accessibility in the long term. The theme chosen by ICOM for 2026 is ‘Museums uniting a divided world’. The theme aims to highlight the role of museums as peacemakers between peoples, at a time increasingly marked by polarisation.
