Bethan Huws (*1961) is a Welsh artist who engages deeply with the work of Marcel Duchamp. Particularly inspired by Duchamp's ready-mades and his playful use of language, she adopts and reinterprets his concepts in her own works. Her text-based works, such as wall installations or writing panels, question perception, context and meaning, often through linguistic ambiguities and shifts. One example of her exploration of Duchamp is her work “Nu descendant un escalier”, which refers to Duchamp's now iconic painting of the same name. The title of the work of art becomes a work of art as she arranges the letters visually. Is it really a “nude descending the stairs”? Or are the letters descending the stairs in a visually falling phrase? Through this shift, she explores not only the idea of movement and transformation, but also the relationship between text, image and perception.
