The almanac “Der Blaue Reiter” (engl.: “The Blue Rider”), published by Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, first appeared in 1912 and is considered one of the most influential works of 20th century art. It brought together texts, images and thoughts from leading artists and writers of the time and was a manifesto of Expressionism. The almanac aimed to unlock a new, universal and spiritual dimension of art and drew connections between different art movements, cultures and eras.
The famous cover picture, designed by Kandinsky himself, features an abstract composition that reflects the basic principles of his art in vivid colors and dynamic forms. It embodies the desire to move away from realistic representation towards an emotional, spiritual pictorial language. The title “Der Blaue Reiter” symbolizes the combination of nature, spirituality and artistic freedom that is expressed throughout the almanac.
